HISTORY OF LITTLE BOHEMIA

A 1910 postcard of Little Bohemia. Some of the original birch trees still stand today

Little Bohemia was built between 1904 and 1907 as part of the oceanfront Ira Cobe estate, Bohemia, the original house of which still stands across the street. The small cottage is a classic, shingle-style, Arts and Crafts gem, retaining much of its original architectural integrity. The house was built by local master builder, Frederick V. Cottrell whose family had a long history in the area as ship’s carpenters and joiners. Little Bohemia may have been built as the original caretaker’s cottage for the estate and sometime in its history, the cottage served as the laundry for the main house. Since being built 100 years ago, the cottage has had only four owners.

Little Bohemia is a cozy 2 bedroom, one bath cottage of just over 1000 square feet.

The cottage is charming and at its widest, measures 15 feet and is just one room wide!

Every room has lots of windows and the feeling is bright and airy!

A gorgeously sunny open air porch is just off the master bedroom

This is the driveway entrance to the cottage
The cottage sleeps four adults in two queen sized beds. There is enough room for a Queen blow up mattress if you have overflow. There are two guest rooms on the first floor:
A large room with a queen bed, fireplace, sitting area, and private covered porch.

also Master bedroom photo and a smaller room with a queen bed and lots of windows for cool summer breezes

The rooms are separated by a hallway with bathroom with tub/ shower, updated fixtures and a beautiful slate floor.and large closet serving all guests.

plus a library / dressing room with a writing desk and a few comfy chairs.

This is a great place to sit and read on a rainy day. It also serves as a work station for your computer, etc. Heck, you could write the great American novel here while smelling the great salt air!

The rooms upstairs all have 10 ft ceilings with ceiling fans. Downstairs, there is a family room with television, DVD player, board games, books, comfortable furniture and a Vermont Castings gas fireplace. Also downstairs is a large quirky kitchen with beadboard cupboards and birch countertops.

The kitchen is open to the family room, so this is a great place to gather during mealtimes . The kitchen does have a full-sized washer / dryer, but does not have a dishwasher. The screened-in porch off the kitchen is fabulous for relaxing or dining al fresco! It has some slight waterviews.

It is a perfect house for one or two couples or a small family.

We have attempted to make cozy Little Bohemia a restful refuge for our guests and there are lots of small comfortable nooks in which to tuck in and read, watch movies, or just stare out the many windows and watch the world go by.

As of the summer of 2008 all beds, sheets, towels, most kitchenware and upholstered furniture is new or newly upholstered in the cottage. We have added some beautiful period furnishings to the cottage to make it feel more like a beloved second home for our guests. We have recently purchased the house, so please bear with us as we add interior photos over the next few months.

For those guests who require it, there is wireless access at Little Bohemia.

The house sits back off the road on almost half an acre of sunny lawns and gardens in front and shady trees in back and is located in the waterfront Victorian cottage community of Bayside Village in the town of Northport, Maine. Founded in 1849 as a tent revival community by the Methodists, Bayside quickly became a resort town with over 300 cottages and a large hotel on site by 1900. Many of the gingerbread cottages still exist and during the summer, Bayside explodes with activity. Little Bohemia does have some limited water views in the summertime, and is a short 300 feet from a waterfront park with beach access!
Bayside Village boasts several parks, its own yacht club, dock, public boat launch, mooring area, a beautiful nine hole golf course, and lots of safe walking and biking areas. Northport, Maine is conveniently located in the midcoast area, right on Penobscot Bay. We are a short drive to shopping in Camden and Ellsworth, hiking trails in the Camden Hills State Park, ferry rides to Islesboro and Monhegan Islands, Colby College Museum of Art, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, and the Farnsworth Art Museum, whale watching in Bar Harbor and lots more. Bring your golf clubs, your boat and your bikes and have the vacation you always dreamed of having!
